A practical example
A small feature such as an invoice reminder involves more than sending a message. The team must decide when it should run, who can change it, how duplicate reminders are avoided and what happens if delivery fails. Those decisions connect user needs, implementation, testing and support. Make them visible before treating the feature as finished.
Software work beyond writing code
| Focus | Practical approach | Check before proceeding |
|---|---|---|
| Understand | Clarify the problem, users and constraints. | An elegant implementation can still solve the wrong problem. |
| Verify | Review behaviour with tests and realistic examples. | Test error paths as well as the happy path. |
| Maintain | Plan updates, support and documentation. | Launch is the start of an operating responsibility. |
When is a software feature complete?
When the agreed behaviour works for its intended users and the team can support it. Include relevant error handling, access controls, verification and operating information in that definition.
